If you’re feeling a bit tired of the decor in a particular room, a simple way to really change things up (without too much time or cost) is to add some patterns!

Let’s be honest, patterns can seem scary, but don’t be intimidated, there are easy ways to add small pops of pattern that can really warm and change the feel of your room, without overwhelming it. With our simple tips and tricks you’ll be a pattern pro in no time!

Try cushions

Adding some patterned cushions to your sofa or bed can be a really simple way of brightening up a dull feeling room. Cushions are a really quick and cost effective way to revive a room, and the perfect option if you’re thinking of dabbling in patterns for the first time!

Be sure to pick cushions that work with the colour scheme you’re already using in the room, if your room is neutral you can go bolder with your choice of cushions, while if your room already boasts a bold colour scheme, it’s best to pick cushions that work with these colours.

Try to balance patterned cushions with neutral tones alongside them, and use this technique if you’re varying patterns and shapes too. So keep neutral cushions in simple shapes across the back of your sofa or bed, and scatter patterned cushions in front of them, this will maintain a soft look, and is a particularly helpful technique if you’re a bit of a novice with patterns!

Freshen up your curtains

Adding patterned curtains can really tie a room together. Once again, it’s important to first consider the existing colour scheme in the room in question. If the room already boats a fairly bold colour scheme, or perhaps patterned wallpaper, then patterned curtains might not be the best choice.

However, if the room in question has a fairly neutral colour scheme, patterned curtains could be the perfect choice to quickly and easily brighten up and complete the room!

When choosing your curtains, consider two things, first is that you like the look of the fabric when the curtains are both open and closed. Second is whether the window gets a lot of sun during the day, if this is the case it might be better to choose lighter colours, as the fabric might fade with time due to the effects of the sun, which could alter the look of the curtains if you choose bold or dark colours.

Consider a new rug

Rugs are a perfect way to add some colour and pattern to a room, an easy rule to consider when adding patterns to a room is that the boldest, most prominent pattern will look best on the floor. So when you’re choosing your rug you have permission to go as bold as you want!

You could even consider layering rugs, either a neutral simple rug layered with a patterned rug on top, or, if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, why not try layering clashing patterns in a similar colour scheme!
