Creating a feature wall, or an accent wall, is a fantastic way to draw attention to a certain part of a room, highlight a statement piece of furniture or simply bring a splash of colour or texture to a space. But many people approach creating a feature wall with a kind of trepidation. Will it be too much? Too garish? Will it look odd or out of place?

Our Top Tips For Feature Walls

If you’re considering installing a feature wall in your living room, bedroom, kitchen or dining room, we’ve put together some top tips to help you make it your own. Whether you're looking to get stuck in and give your whole room a refresh or have been dreaming about pulling your existing decor together with a feature wall for a while, we've got all the information you need to get it right.

Choose The Right Wall

First things first, choose a wall! Yes, yes - we know it sounds ridiculous but many people decide they want a feature wall without having decided which wall to put it on!

Choosing the right wall for your feature wall is important because it will help you achieve your vision. We recommend picking a wall that is a focal point in the room. A space that your eye is drawn to when you first walk in. Alternatively, consider highlighting a wall that’s home to a stand out design feature, such as a fireplace or mantelpiece.

Ideally, you want to choose a nice, wide, open space if you can. Walls with windows and doors can be used for a feature wall but these elements tend to take away from the overall effect rather than add to it.

Be Bold

When it comes to feature walls don’t shy away from being bright and bold! If the room you are decorating is currently painted a neutral hue, like cream, plump for a bold contrasting shade that really makes the wall pop!

Your feature wall can be a place to show your personality, add colour and texture, or create drama and depth. Whatever look you are going for, don’t be afraid to jump in with both feet and go for something that really stands out from the crowd.

Know Your Decor

The whole point of a feature wall is that it encompasses your style and becomes something you enjoy every day. When you’re planning your feature wall, take some time to connect with your inner interior designer and explore the type of decor that resonates with you.

If vintage chic is your jam then you may favour patterned wallpaper over paint. There are some fantastic floral styles available at the moment that complement period (and even upcycled) furniture wonderfully. Similarly, if you prefer a quirkier vibe, busier patterned wallpapers may be just the thing. For more minimalist style, choosing a shade of paint that is darker or lighter than the main wall colour will create a dramatic statement that draws the eye without looking too busy.

When it comes to choosing what to adorn your walls with such as paint or wallpaper, let your style be your guide. Take a look around you at your furniture, your soft furnishings, and your decorations. What kind of style are they? What colours would work well with them? It's worth noting too that many wallpapers can be bought with complementing fabrics, so you can create all manner of soft furnishings from scatter cushions to curtains in order to pull your chosen look together!

Frame It

When your feature wall is decorated consider framing it with furniture. If it is highlighting a mantelpiece or fireplace, carefully choose some finishing touches to give it the wow factor. If you are lucky enough to be jazzing up a wide, empty space, consider choosing one or two pieces of statement furniture to really make it shine. For example, a pair of armchairs or a complementing sofa can work wonderfully in front of a feature wall.

Alternatively, if your new feature wall is in your bedroom, you might consider choosing a new bed frame to fit the look (if it doesn’t already!).

Whatever your style or preferences, a feature wall is a fantastic way of communicating it effortlessly. When done right, feature walls are a beautiful addition to any home that not only draws the eye but allows for you to build your own interior design style around it. So whether you’ve just moved in or have been in your home for years, a feature wall could be just the thing to inject a bit of you into your home!
