Refresh Your Home For Spring With These Cleaning Tips

Posted on - 18th May 2020

There’s something incredibly motivating about spring, especially when it comes to our homes. Perhaps it’s the change in the weather. The freshness in the air and the glimpses of sunshine that become more and more frequent as the season wears on. Whatever the reason, spring energises us. With more and more of us tackling long overdue DIY projects and giving our home a much needed spring clean to clear away the winter cobwebs.

Spring Cleaning Tips

A clean and tidy home also has a very real impact on how we feel when we’re at home. Uncluttered rooms, where everything has a place, can make us feel calmer and more in control - which can’t be a bad thing. So, if you’re thinking of taking on a spring clean, we’ve compiled our best tips for giving your home the deep clean it deserves.

Clear Out The Clutter

Clutter is the worst culprit when it comes to our homes feeling chaotic. Whether it’s a glut of toys clogging up the kid’s bedroom floors or bits and bobs you haven’t got around to throwing away just yet. Whatever it is, unnecessary clutter takes up too much space and can leave your home feeling overwhelmed by...stuff.

So, the first step to an effective spring clean is to clear out the clutter. Get rid of anything you haven’t used in over a year and try and find a home for the things you do need. While we’re not going to go Marie Kondo on you and tell you to thank all your possessions for their service (unless that’s your thing), we do suggest going through each room and having a good old clear out of the things you don’t need.

If the thought of decluttering overwhelms you, start small. Tackle that drawer of junk and batteries in your kitchen or start with just one section of your wardrobe. You’ll most likely find that the sense of accomplishment and reward of a clutter free space (no matter how small) will help you to tackle the rest.

Find A Place For Everything

A place for everything and everything in its place. That’s what they say, right? And you’ll be amazed how easy it is to keep on top of cleaning and tidying your home when everything has a home.

While it can be tempting to relegate those things you don’t know what to do with to a corner, cupboard or the spare room, you’re going to have to face it sometime. Get all those things out and decide what stays and what goes. When you’ve done that, find the things that you decide to keep a permanent home.

For example, if you have lots of paperwork that’s building up in a drawer, consider devising a filing system that will keep it neat and accessible. Similarly, if your bathroom is a haven for all sorts of lotion and potions, try a corner caddy or one that sticks to the wall, or even a new cabinet. Having a place for everything will encourage you to put things back where they belong and avoid a new build up of clutter in the future.

Do It Room By Room

Just like starting with a small space and building up in your decluttering, tackling your spring clean room by room can make it more manageable. Work logically, tackling the rooms that maybe need the most care and attention first and finishing with those areas that don’t need the most work.

It may be tempting to leave the worst till last, but don’t. It’s likely you’ll run out of steam before you get to them, and not much will change if you stick to the rooms that are cleaned more frequently.

As they say: swallow the frog! Do the worst thing first and I guarantee you’ll feel better for it.

Kickstart A New Cleaning Routine

There’s nothing like a spring clean to make your realise that you need to do more to stay on top of your home. While some people may be ardent Hinchers, cleaning their home with meticulous precision, some of us take a more lax approach that can result in our homes looking more than a little worse for wear and in need of TLC.

If that is the case, use your spring clean as an opportunity to kick start a new cleaning routine - and get the whole family involved. Draw up a rota and assign weekly duties, like hoovering, mopping, and wiping down surfaces, to all members of the household. Then follow through with it.

You’ll be amazed at the difference when everyone pulls their weight!

Redecorate & Redesign

Finally, if you’re really looking to shake things up in your home, why not plan to redecorate? This doesn’t have to mean you refurnish the whole house, or strip all the walls in readiness for painting. It can mean starting with just one room that you think is a bit tired and planning a whole new look for it, or picking up a few bits and bobs to jazz it up.

Use social media channels like Instagram and Pinterest for inspiration and find a style that works with you and your family life. Then, shop around to find wallpaper, paint, furniture, fabrics and finishing touches to see it come to life.

Even just the addition of a few picture frames, mirrors, candles, new cushions or carpets can be enough to make a room feel fresh and new. So you don’t have to spend a fortune changing things up either.
