New Home New Style

Moving into a new home is a great time to re-evaluate your home style. Whether you are moving with furniture or looking for a complete fresh start, this can be a daunting, yet exciting time.

Where to start

If you are looking to start from scratch, even if it's just the one room, you'll be wondering where to start. Many people opt to start with the colour of the room first, but where does that leave you when furniture shopping? Trying to match your furniture to your walls, or finding colours that compliment each other. Why not try this the other way around, find your biggest furniture item, and work from there.
The availability of paint mixed to a specific colour makes the colour of the room far easier than it ever has been before, meanwhile, your furniture may not be so easy to choose.
Starting with those larger items, like your sofa or your bed, allows you to choose exactly what you like, without worrying about the colour of your walls. Choose the sofas that you feel comfortable in, the headboard that makes you smile, and the dining room furniture you can be proud to host in, then worry about the colour of the room after.
By choosing your larger items first, you can turn these into the focal feature of the room, rather than the main wall (or even the TV). Working from the inside out means you can choose wall colours or wallpaper that compliments your furniture. You can even make the choice to go bold with your furniture choice and keep your walls simple.

Where in the room

There are a number of factors that come into play when you look at positioning furniture and certain colours within a room. Firstly, space will play a vital role in your layout, you might think a sofa looks great against one wall, but it means you can't open the door, or the bed looks great under the window, but you can't walk past the end. Finding the right place for these pieces can change the whole dynamics of the room, both for space and colour. Secondly, and this is one that many people miss when they decorate a new home, is lighting. Spending some time in each room across the day should give you an idea of any light and dark areas throughout the course of the day. Knowing these areas means that you can decorate to compensate. For example, dark colours make dark spaces look and feel smaller, so may be better suited to larger lighter spaces. Not only will lighting impact the colour of the space, but also the furniture you fill it with, such as positioning of sofas away from window glare etc.

Think about your style

There may be many items of furniture that tick most of your boxes, but the biggest issue is the style. They may fit the space, they may be the right colour, they may fit the budget, but do you actually like it?
When you find furniture, you need to ensure that it ticks that final box, your personal style. If you decide on a piece of furniture that doesn't suit your style, you may find yourself on a furniture hunt sooner than you would like. You may not find something that fits your style straight away, but by holding out that little longer you may come across a gem, you never know, it may even save you money on redecorating in the long run!
