How To Look After New Carpets

Posted on - 15th June 2020

Carpets are a fantastic addition to any home. In an instant they can warm up rooms, particularly bedrooms and living spaces. What’s more, when looked after properly they look and feel very luxurious for a number of years.

At Toons, we supply and fit a wide range of carpets to customers in Swadlincote, Ashby de la Zouch, Lichfield, Derbyshire and Staffordshire. We are the first choice for homes in and around this area because we supply and fit carpets from the biggest, most well-known UK brands including Abingdon Flooring, Axminster Carpets, Ulster, Associated Weavers and Fells Carpets.

Caring For A New Carpet

If you’re considering carpets for your home, you’re probably wondering what kind of maintenance is involved to keep them looking fresh and clean. The truth is, keeping carpets in good condition does take some regular maintenance. But the investment of time is worth it for the finish carpets bring to your home.

In this carpet care guide, we’ll look at the ways in which you can care for your new carpet following installation.

New Carpet Care

If you have just invested in new carpets, or are considering doing so, then it’s important to look at how you will care for them going forward. Preventing stains and wear is much more effective than trying to turn back the clock once the damage is done. And there are lots of things you can do to plan ahead and protect your carpet long term.

Utilise Doormats, Runners & Rugs

High traffic areas in your home will wear faster and be exposed to more dirt and moisture. One way to protect these areas is by placing doormats at all the entrances of your home, runners along hallways and rugs in areas where spills and scuffs are more likely to happen.

All of these preventative measures will work to stop the most used areas of carpet from wearing down or becoming stained.

Vacuum Regularly

When your new carpet is installed, we recommend vaccuming it as soon as possible, and at regular intervals afterwards. This helps to remove some of the short fibres which may become loose following installation.

If you notice this, please do not be concerned. Loose fibres are completely normal following installation and you may notice these more than normal the first few times you vacuum.

Regular vacuuming beyond installation will also ensure that dirt and grit is removed from the pile. Vacuuming also keeps the tufts within the pile upright, so if you’re carpet is looking a little wilted from use then a run over with the hoover will work wonders on its appearance.

Perfect Your Stain Routine

The quicker you deal with stains and spills, the better. Which is why it’s good to have everything you need to hand in the event that something does stain your carpet.

We understand that the first instinct when something is spilled on the carpet is to get it wet and rub vigorously in the hope it will come out. Don’t! Rubbing your carpet can untwist the pile and cause it to look rough. Instead only dampen and gently blot any liquid spillages with a clean white cloth to lift them up. You can also apply a carpet cleaner to the area too but be sure to try it on a small part of the carpet that you can hide if anything goes wrong before you go to town!

For any solid stains, it is best to scrape them off and then use a carpet cleaner to remove any residue. Again, don’t rub the carpet as you’ll noticeably change the way it looks. Be sure not to over wet the carpet either. To remove stains, make it damp not drenched.
