5 Ways To Go Bold With Fabric

Posted on - 22nd April 2020

Soft furnishings and fabrics are a fantastic, low commitment way to jazz up your indoor space. Not only that, but they also give you the opportunity to let your creativity and personality run wild within your home. While some may prefer to fill their home with anything and everything that brings joy (a la Marie Kondo), others may prefer to utilise fabrics sparingly to accent an area or bring warmth or texture.

Whatever your style, we want to nurture your love for bold, patterned fabrics. So, to help you, we have put together 5 ways you can go bold with fabric in your home! Read on to check them out!

5 Tips For Bold Fabrics

1. Be Fearless

Ever find yourself drawn to colourful, bold fabrics only to pull back at the last minute? For some reason, many of us shy away from these bright and beautiful soft furnishings and fabrics. Perhaps it’s a hangover from the minimalistic trends that seems to favour monochromes and clean lines.

But if you are considering trying out patterned, printed or coloured fabrics, the best advice we can give you is to dive in. Be experimental and don’t overthink it. Some of the craziest combinations will work better than any carefully considered pairings. So, choose what makes you happy, throw them together and see what sticks.

2. Start With A Neutral Base

I know, we just told you to be bold. And we mean it! But start with a neutral background on your walls, then use coloured and patterned fabrics to bring the colour. This makes it fairly easy for you to change things up as and when you like without having to spend lots of money and time redoing a feature wall or redecorating.

If you’d prefer a feature wall, choose furniture in block colours and use fabrics and patterned soft furnishings to co-ordinate with both your chosen wallpaper and furniture. This will help you strike a balance between quirky and eclectic without verging on looking busy!

3. Try Before You Buy

Fabric samples are easy to get hold of. And at Toons Furnishers, we have whole pattern books available to browse to help customers get an idea of the look and feel of a fabric. Seeing it in real life and being able to compare on contrast with other colours will give you a better idea of whether or not you can live with a bright, bold pattern in combination with your other décor!

4. Layer & Accent

If you’re more of a ‘throw it all together and see what happens’ sort of person, then have it! But if you’d like to follow some interior décor best practice, consider layering your prints by using smaller patterns to break up large ones. Or, if you’ve fallen in love with one print in particular and would like to showcase it, like an accent chair or cushion, put it on top of a block colour. For example, you may place a bold and bright accent chair or sofa on top of a rug in a coordinating colour to really make it pop.

5. Choose A Colour Scheme

Jumping in with both feet may result in a clash of different patterns. This isn’t always a bad thing, especially if that’s your style. But if you’re looking for a more cohesive finish that’s pleasing to the eye, choose a colour scheme that’s made up of two main accent colours. You can then choose prints, fabrics and accessories and finishing touches in these colours to tie everything together.

Be Bold, Be Fearless, Be You

When it comes to printed and patterned fabrics, it’s all about what makes you happy, and what you can live with. The beauty of mixing up prints using soft furnishings and other decorative aspects is you can change them up as and when you feel like it by moving them around. So don’t be afraid of choosing vibrant, colourful, funky and fun prints when the opportunity arises.
