Transform Your Space: Creative Ways to Use Rugs in Interior Design

Posted on - 16th April 2024

In the world of interior design, rugs are often undervalued and only belong on the floor. Despite their general purpose, rugs are incredibly versatile pieces of decor and can be used in more than one way to decorate and transform a space. In this article, we reveal some unique and creative ways to use rugs around your home. Besides, luxury and beautifully crafted rugs deserve a better place than the floor as they are too stunning to be walked over!

On Your Wall

Similar to tapestry and artwork, rugs can be hung on walls. It might feel like an unusual idea, but it is a fantastic way to fill a plain wall. Plus, hanging a rug horizontally can lengthen the room. While a wall rug may not be for everyone’s taste, it is quite a popular decor feature in Middle Eastern and Persian homes. We recommend opting for an antique rug such as our OW Nomad Rug which features Persian and Middle Eastern patterns.

Nonetheless, wall rugs can be incorporated into bohemian and contemporary homes. Contempaenty homes can choose a graphic rug like our Zoe Rug, which adds colour and draws the eye. Just ensure to hang the rug securely with wall hooks and a curtain pole so it doesn’t fall down.

On Your Bed

Yes, you read that right, rugs can be draped over your bed. Simply place or fold a large rug over the foot of your bed. We recommend choosing a textured or woven rug to add depth and character. Take it up a level by layering it with a tassel bed throw or blanket for a bohemian touch. This will also work nicely by draping it over the corner of your bed to create a lived-in and cosy look. Most rugs are heavy and will be ideal during the winter to keep your feet warm and toasty.

On Your Sofa

If a rug can be draped over your bed, it can also be placed over your sofa. This is a great idea if you have a minimalist living room and you are looking to add a pop of colour or texture. To achieve the desired look, remove any cushions and place a rug on the back of the sofa, leaving some material hanging down. Adding a rug here adds a new element to the room and nicely dresses the back of a sofa, as long as it is not placed against a wall.

If you have a neutral-coloured soda, we advise you to choose a geometric rug. On the other hand, if you have a coloured sofa, look for a rug with a touch of the same colour to tie them together. For instance, our Moda Blue rug would match nicely with a similar blue or salmon-pink sofa.
