When you invest in a piece of dream furniture, you want to imagine that it’s going to last forever,  but furniture that’s used on a daily basis in your home is bound to face wear and tear.

Fear not though! Like many things in life, if you take care of your furniture, it’ll take care of you (for longer), take a look at our top tips below for extending the life of your furniture!

Be gentle

When you need to move your furniture it can be tempting to simply push or drag it, especially the heavier items! However, not only can moving furniture clumsily scratch your flooring, it can also damage your furniture too!

If you need to move a large piece of furniture it’s important that you lift it properly- even if this means having to ask a friend or neighbour for help! It’s also important to consider using professional help when you’re moving home, while this can be expensive, a lot of damage to furniture can occur during a move, if the furniture isn’t handled and packed properly.

Spot clean

When it comes to the longevity of your furniture it’s important to maintain its appearance. The best way to do this is to try and avoid stains, while this is easier said than done, you can consider tools like sofa protectors to prevent marks from food and pets.

When the inevitable spillages do occur though, don't panic, keep a spot cleaner on hand (just make sure its a formulation that’s suitable for the fabric in question), and spritz that stain before it has a chance to set!

It’s also important to maintain a regular cleaning schedule, to avoid a build up of dust fibres and dirt! Hoover your furniture regularly, and consider a yearly proffessional clean to really deep clean your furniture- safely!

Avoid direct sunlight

The sun can really damage your furniture if you let it, and you can increase the longevity of your furniture by controlling the amount of direct sunlight that reaches it.

Where possible, place furniture likely to fade as a result of sunlight in areas of the room that the sun’s rays don’t reach. If this isn’t possible, consider installing blinds to reduce the amount of direct sunlight that enters a room, or consider covering your furniture with throws or table cloths to prevent the sun’s rays from reaching the furniture.

Use those coasters!

Protect the surfaces of your furniture. and prevent water marks and scratches, by using coasters and place mats. Don’t be afraid to enforce house rules, ask that your guests and family respect your furniture, water rings and scratches are much easier to prevent than they are to remove!
