Things To Do Indoors & Out That Will Make You Want To Stay At Home

Home is where the heart is. But our lives are often played out outside the home. At work, at the shops, with our friends and family. In these strange times we have been given an instruction: stay at home. But living in the same 4 walls for a prolonged period of time isn’t always easy.

To make it a little more bearable, we’ve put together some serious home and garden inspiration that will make you want to stay at home. From ways to jazz up a small outdoor space to things you can do with the kids to keep them entertained during this difficult period.

Things To Do At Home

If you have some spare time, there are lots of things you can do at home to feel productive and keep yourself entertained. Here are a few to get you started:

Create A Piece Of Artwork

It’s time to get creative! Even if you’ve never painted or drawn in your life, it’s never too late to flex those artistic muscles. You could even create a piece of artwork that you can display in your living room!

While it may not be possible to head out and buy art supplies, you’ll find plenty of things around the house. A piece of card or paper can make the perfect canvas for your work of art. And the types of materials you can use are only limited to your imagination!

If you have kids it’s likely you’ll have paints or colouring pencils lying around. What’s more, it’s a great activity to share with little ones. Head off on a hunt around your house to find materials and then get to work making your masterpiece. You never know, you might find that you rather enjoy it and you’ve discovered a new hobby you can enjoy for life!

Plan Your Home Decor With Pinterest

Pinterest is a social networking platform where you can discover new ideas. On it, you can create a board and ‘pin’ images or videos that you come across. Pinterest is the perfect place to get inspired for your next home renovation project as you can search for all types of styles and use that as a springboard for your plans.

You can even follow Toons on Pinterest and get inspired! We have a range of boards to explore from bedroom inspiration to the latest trends.

Make A Cosy Den

Who else remembers making a den as a child? Of course you do! Who says you can’t do it as an adult too? Obviously, if you have children at home they will probably be just as enthusiastic to do this as you are, so get the whole family involved.

Let your imagination run wild when planning your den. Is it possible to plan a whole structure from pillows, blankets and dining furniture? Or maybe you can create a cosy teepee that can be used as a reading corner?

Whether you need a little space for some precious ‘me’ time or just want to entice the young ones away from their screens for a couple of hours, creating a den is just the thing to get everyone working together and exercising their creativity.

Have A Bake-Off

The Great British Bake Off has been a national favourite for years. And now you can bring it to your own kitchen. If you have a few staples for making a cake knocking around, dig out those cake tins and start baking.

From biscuits and cakes to bread, baking is an easy and fun way to occupy your mind. And, of course, at the end of it you’ll have a spread of yummy food to enjoy.

Upcycle A Piece Of Furniture

Upcycling furniture is a cost-effective and fun way to repurpose a piece of old furniture. And the only limit to how far you go with this comes down to your imagination! If you are stuck for ideas, you can find lots of inspiration on Pinterest, YouTube and Instagram.

For example, old ladders can be repurposed as a shelf for plants, ornaments and photographs. Or a tired sideboard can be sanded down and repainted to give it a whole new lease of life!

Things To Do In The Garden

With the weather perking up you’re most likely itching to get out into the garden. The good news is that with the advent of spring there are plenty of things to do in your outdoor space, however big or small they may be!

Getting out in the fresh air will work wonders on your stress levels and give you a good dose of vitamin D while you are at it, so don’t forget about these natural extensions to your home.

Make A Compost Heap

Creating a compost heap is really easy. What’s more, you most likely have all the things necessary to make one lying around at home. While many people may buy a dedicated compost bin you can just as easily use a plastic storage bin or other container to get started.

The waste you can put in your compost bin includes grass cuttings and other green waste, teabags, fruit and vegetable peelings and leaves. You can also include things like cardboard egg boxes, eggshells and paper.

When the compost is ready it can be spread onto flower beds to help them flourish and keep weeds at bay.

Start A Vegetable Patch

One of the great things about growing vegetables is that you don’t have to be particularly green-fingered to do it. What’s more, growing your own can help the environment and save you money.

Depending on space you can grow vegetables in a designated plot or even in individual pots, so you don’t need oodles of space for this.  Potatoes can even be grown in a sack or in boxes filled with soil very easily.

Decorate Your Outdoor Space

From small balcony areas to sprawling gardens, decorating your outdoor space can make it more homely and enjoyable when you can use it.

To get started, simply use what you have to inspire you. Already have some garden furniture? Give it a good clean and maybe think about upcycling it or painting it if it is looking a bit worse for wear. Similarly, if you have decking you could paint it to add a splash of colour to your outdoor space.

You could also create hanging planters or a window box to add some greenery to a space. Again, you don’t have to go out on a special trip to get what you need to do this. You most likely have a range of things you can repurpose to create a beautiful outdoor space that’s perfect for spending the day lounging in.

Get Active

Exercise is as important as ever, and exercising outside can be a real mood booster. What’s more, you don’t need any fancy equipment to get sweaty outside. Set up a game of football with the kids using jackets and sweatshirts as goalposts. Do a few laps around the garden. Take your yoga mat outside. Or just do a few stretches in the fresh air.

Camp Out

Enjoy all the fun of camping with all your home comforts on the doorstep! Simply grab your tent and set it up in the back garden for instant holiday vibes. Doing something like that can be an amazing experience for the kids who can help erect the tent and prepare a picnic to enjoy out on the lawn.

There are lots of things you can do to keep yourself and the whole family entertained. All it takes is a little bit of imagination and creativity and you’re set.
