Tips to Make your Rented Flat a Home

When you’re renting any property, particularly a flat, it can be difficult to really make it feel like home.

The list of things you can’t do tends to be quite long, and when you can’t repaint or paper a wall, hang pictures with nails, or change that odd grey carpet, it can be difficult to give the place a personal touch.

Let there be light

The lighting in rental properties can really leave a lot to be desired, if you’re lucky the place might come with some faded old light shades, but when you aren’t so lucky those exposed lightbulbs are never a good look!

Why not invest in some pretty, brightly coloured light shades to brighten up your home. Not only will light shades add some colour to a room, but they help soften the light given off too, which can help make a room feel warmer.

Don’t forget to consider adding a couple of matching lamps too, a lamp can really warm up a dark corner and help to make a room feel cosier. Another option to help add a cosy feel is fairy lights, why not add a string of fairy lights to the shelf in your living room, or hang them over your headboard. This is an easy, mess free way to add some warmth and colour to any room!

Rugs, rugs, rugs!

Rugs can really add a personal touch to a room when you’re unable to actually change the decor. If the colour scheme in your rented property can feel a bit plain, why not consider a bright, patterned rug for the middle of your living room?

Alternatively, plain coloured rugs in soft fabrics and faux furs can give a room a cosy, warm feel. If you’re happy with your colour scheme, but feel like the room still needs something extra, why not try a fur rug under your coffee table, or a fur throw over your sofa, or the foot of your bed.

Invest in some fresh window coverings

Don’t underestimate the change that a new set of blinds or curtains can make to a room!  If you plan on being in your rental for a while, you should definitely consider putting up your own curtains, or replacing the blinds.

If the colour scheme of the property is too plain for your tastes, this is a perfect opportunity to easily add some colour!

Ensure that the method you use for putting up your curtains makes them easy to take down, and then you can go wild picking out patterns and colours that perfectly suit your personal preferences, knowing that you can easily remove them and restore the property to a clean slate!

Lean your wall hangings

You might have strict rules in your contract regarding hanging art on the walls, but this doesn’t mean you can’t still display your favourite canvases, frames and mirrors in your property!

Try leaning them against the wall instead, whether on a shelf or on top of a table or sideboard, or just on the floor! Leaning, rather than hanging these items on your walls, not only allows you to still display them and add a personal touch to your home, but also adds a modern vibe to your decor too!

Breathe some life in with houseplants

House plants can really add some life to an otherwise dull room, so it’s worth considering them too! A large potted plant can fill some empty space in the corner of a room, while smaller plants can add some life, and a quirky feel, when placed on shelves or window sills around your home.
