How To Choose Artwork For Your Home

Artwork and prints are a great way to add your unique style and personality to your home. Whether you favour classic, contemporary or quirky decor, a well chosen print or piece of art can help to tie furniture, wallpaper, curtains and soft furnishings together with ease.

How To Choose Artwork

In this blog post, we’ll look at the types of artwork that lends itself to a particular room, how you can style it, and how you can choose artwork for your home without breaking the bank.

Complement Or Contrast

Artwork and prints can be used to either complement or contrast with your interior decor. Both can work really well, but it’s important to understand the kind of vibe you’re going for to get the look you are envisioning.

If you would prefer your artwork to complement your decor and colour scheme, choose a piece that features one of the main colours in your chosen palette. It doesn’t have to be the exact shade, in fact variations in the tint and hues can create a nice effect without being jarring with the colour scheme.

Alternatively, clashing colours can make a really bold statement. And it’s easily achieved with a piece of artwork. The best advice we can give to nailing clashing colours is to choose a piece of artwork or print that features a colour that is very different from your main colour scheme. This will work to create a focal point that stands out from the crowd.

Size & Shape

Size really does matter when it comes to your artwork. Too small and it won’t create the type of impact you desire. Too big and it could dominate far too much of the room. If you’re in the market for a piece of artwork then make sure you take adequate measurements before you commit.

If you really love a piece of artwork but find it may be too small, consider mixing it with other frames of varying sizes to make an interesting feature wall that will draw the eye and create interest.

Styling

When it comes to styling and accessorising artwork, you can either leave it centre stage (especially if it's a real statement piece) or add layering to create more interest. For example, lighting such as ceiling pendants or floor lamps can be used to great effect to provide illumination and to add texture and contrast. Other elements which can be added around your chosen art piece is a houseplant. Strategically placed in the corner, a bit of green foliage can be used to great effect to add a natural look that is both sophisticated and elegant.

Go For A Combo

Combining artwork is a fantastic way to fill large spaces, such as that over a fireplace, to great effect. Lots of artwork can be bought in sets. Usually, you’ll find they come in either pairs or a trio, and while they may look different they will utilise the same colour schemes and tie in with one another effortlessly.

Another easy trick to double up your artwork is to buy two identical pieces and frame them different, or hang them in a different way. This can create a really interesting feature that will draw the eye of guests and create a really fabulous focal point.
