Different Ways To Hang Curtains: 6 Curtain Hanging Styles

Posted on - 23rd May 2023

Curtains are one of the most important additions to any room. They offer many purposes - they block out sunlight for better sleep, provide privacy from prying eyes (even nasty neighbours!), prevent draughts from open windows and improve the aesthetic appearance of the room. There are many different colours, styles and hanging styles of curtains that you can choose from. When it comes to hanging them, it’s not just a case of throwing them on the curtain pole and hoping for the best result. In this article, we will go through different ways to hang curtains including 6 curtain hanging styles to make your room even more stylish and appealing!

1) Rod Pocket

Rod pocket curtains or also referred to as pole pocket curtains have a pocket along the top of the curtain to easily feed the pole through. The ‘pocket’ is made when the top of the fabric is folded back on itself and stitched or sewn together to form the pocket. You can create or eliminate pleats in your curtains by altering the fabric to make the width slightly shorter or longer than the curtain pole. The only downside is that the curtain pole has to be taken down to wash or replace the curtains. On the other hand, the view of the curtain pole is hidden behind the pocket. This style is commonly used in sheer curtains, as these curtains aren’t opened or drawn back as much as other curtains.

2) Curtain Rings

Curtains are much easier to hang with the help of curtain rings. These rings are attached to the rod and the curtains have small hooks at the header, which are then hung onto the rings of the curtain rod. Generally, the curtain rod, rings and hooks are finished in the same colour to match each other. This is a practical and durable way of hanging curtains, once the rings are in place, as the curtains can easily be detached and attached.

3) Eyelets

Definitely one of the modern styles, eyelet curtains are similar to rod pocket curtains, but the rings are metal and noticeably larger. Sections of the curtain pole can be seen when hung. Eyelet curtains are hung by weaving them through the metal rings to create large deep pleats. Like the rod pocket curtains, the curtain pole has to be taken down when you want to take down or hang up the curtains. However, they give a neat and tidy appearance, either open or closed.

4) Pencil Pleat

Pencil pleat curtains have tight folds of fabric that are bunched and gathered together to form a line of small pleats at the header, resembling a row of pencils (hence the name). Both modern and elegant, you can choose to hang pencil pleat curtains from either curtain rings and a curtain pole for a contemporary finish, or with curtain hooks and curtain tracks for a traditional look. Speaking of pencil pleat curtains, we have a previous blog article on how to hang pencil pleat curtains if you are interested in this particular style.

5) Tab-Tops

These curtains have extra ribbons of the same fabric sewn to the header and tied around the curtain rod to create a line of knots. This style of curtain offers a rustic, casual and relaxed feel to the room. Tab-top curtains are generally lightweight, meaning there is no need to take down the curtain rod to hang the curtains. Instead, the knots can be easily hooked back onto the curtain pole. In fact, it is much easier to hang the curtains in this style when the support of the knots is already in place.

6) Tie-Tops

Similar to tab tops, but without the knots. Tie-top curtains have small loops at the header. These small loops can either be closed or open. A closed loop is where the loops are sewn into the curtain fabric. An open loop is where the back of the loops are sewn and the front of the loops can be opened and closed with either buttons, studs, snap fasteners or Velcro. Tie-top curtains give a similar informal and relaxed feel as tab-top curtains.
