5 Tips For Staying Cool At Home This Summer

Posted on - 19th August 2020

Heatwaves are fantastic when you can get your sunglasses on and head out into the garden and enjoy your outdoor furniture. But what about when you’re working from home? Or during those muggy evenings when you’re struggling to sleep? There’s nothing worse than feeling uncomfortably hot in a British heatwave, especially when you’re not used to it. In this article we’ll look at 6 tips for staying cool at home this summer.

Our Top Tips For Staying Cool At Home

Keep The Curtains Closed

We know, there’s nothing better than throwing the curtains and windows opening and letting the light flood in during the summer months. However, there’s a slight problem with this. As the day wears on, and gets hotter, your home essentially becomes a greenhouse as the sun beams through the windows. Not nice when you’re stuck inside! If you can, it’s much better to keep your curtains and blinds closed throughout the day. Blackout blinds and curtains are particularly good at this as their thickness works to keep heat firmly out when they’re drawn.

Invest In Cotton Bed Sheets

While memory foam mattresses are great for a good night’s sleep, they also retain heat which can make you feel hotter. To mitigate this invest in light coloured cotton sheets and bedding. Cotton is particularly good at keeping you cool as it is breathable. As well as this, it helps to wick moisture away from the skin so you’re less likely to wake up feeling sweaty even on the warmest summer nights.

Sleep Downstairs

As heat rises, it’s actually better to sleep downstairs rather than upstairs during a heatwave. If you have a comfortable sofa, or a sofa bed, this might not be too difficult to do. If you don’t have the luxury of a comfortable sofa, bringing your mattress downstairs and sleeping on the floor will keep you much cooler than going upstairs.

Turn Off The Lights

Electricity generates heat, so keeping lights on will keep your home warmer. In the throes of summer, with earlier mornings and lighter evenings, keeping your lights off shouldn’t be too difficult. More energy efficient light bulbs and light fixtures can also help with this.

Get A Feather Down Mattress Topper

Feather down mattress toppers work much the same as cotton bed sheets - they wick away moisture and allow for skin to breather. Mattress toppers with cotton are much more effective at keeping you cool in summer than those made of polyester, or memory foam.
