5 Of The Best Things To Help You Sleep Better

Posted on - 16th March 2023

Did you know National Bed Month takes place every March? But that’s not the only related event happening this month, World Sleep Day is also held on the 17th March. You could say March is really dedicated to sleep! The aim of these events is to highlight the importance of sleep to the public.

In honour of National Bed Month and World Sleep Day, we decided to write an article about how to improve the quality of your sleep. Continue reading to discover the 5 best things to help you sleep better.

1) Comfortable Mattress

The best thing to do to help you sleep better is to switch out your current mattress. The average person spends one third of their life sleeping. That’s an extremely long time spent laying on a mattress so it’s best to invest in a good one. A comfortable mattress will support the natural alignment of your spine while you sleep, so it’s important to choose the right firmness for your sleeping position.

2) Quality Bedding

A quality mattress isn’t completed without quality bedding. Sometimes, sleep deprivation could be down to your current bedding. To help you sleep better, choose bedding made from natural fibres such as cotton, wool, silk or linen. These materials are super cosy, long-lasting, breathable, and hyperallergic. In terms of pillows, choose a memory foam pillow for extra head and neck support.

3) Black Out Curtains

All curtains are designed to keep light out but some light still seems to penetrate through. For people who love sleeping in a completely dark room, black out curtains are a great choice to block out all sorts of light and noise. Black out curtains are ideal for people who work on night shifts. So you can sleep peacefully without outdoor light and noise interfering with your sleep pattern. With that being said, black out curtains are suitable for everyone, particularly those living in busy urban areas.

4) Soft Coloured Furnishings

Did you know that introducing certain colours into your bedroom is another way to help you sleep? Vibrant colours are far from soothing. Whereas softer and muted shades of blues, yellows, greens, oranges, pinks, creams and whites can help wind you down and fall asleep by calming the nervous system. A great way to introduce these colours is by decorating your bedroom with cushions, throws, wallpaper, and artwork.

5) Dimmed Lighting

Just like daylight peeking through curtains and disrupting your sleep, being in a bright artificially lit room before bedtime can make it harder to drift off. Sleep experts recommend dimming the lights before hitting the hay and spending less time on blue light devices such as phones and TVs. Swapping out your standard LED lights for dimmable lighting such as bedside locker lights or floor lights with slightly warmer light bulbs can make a difference. Warm light is less stimulating on the brain, thus helping you relax and making you fall asleep easier.
