Have you ever been lying down on your luxury sofa watching TV in the middle of a beautiful warm day, and found yourself drifting asleep due to the undeniable comfort and relaxation you find yourself in. We can assume that for many of you, this has been the case at some point. 

There are many reasons you could fall asleep on your sofa. As previously alluded to, during some of the hottest days, the extreme heat can make you tired which can lead to you falling asleep if you are in a comfortable position. Similarly, after a long and grueling day at work you might think nothing of flippantly napping whilst positioned on your living room seating arrangement.

Comfort

As previously alluded to, sleeping on the sofa for many can seem like a comforter option than sleeping on a bed. Feeling Safer

While this reasoning might not be as common, there are some people that enjoy sleeping on sofas because they feel safe and secure. Due to the fact that many sofas are in the living room and usually by the front door; some people prefer the security that having a more general access to your home offers. Sleeping near the main entrance to your home offers a great peace of mind as it feels as though you have authority over who enters your home. 

Providing A Change of Scenery

Sleeping on a sofa can offer a unique change of scenery and therefore a completely different experience altogether. Many studies have shown that having a change of scenery when going to sleep can have multiple positive effects. 

One commonly acknowledged potential advantage is being to help, and in some cases cure, insomnia. Changing scenery can sometimes help make you feel more relaxed and subsequently trick your brain into falling asleep a lot easier. 

Arguments Against

Potential Risks

While many people enjoy having a nap on their sofa; there are also quite a few detractors. The most commonly cited argument against sleeping on a sofa is the potential negative health effects. 

While spending the odd night on your sofa or the occasional nap won’t do too much harm, consistent sleeping on sofas can lead to problems with your back, legs and neck. This is largely due to the fact that sofas are smaller than beds meaning you can not lie down and spread out appropriately. This in turn leads to poor circulation and subsequent joint problems. 

Poor Sleep Quality

Although some people find falling to sleep on sofas much easier than falling asleep on beds; studies have found that sleeping on a sofa usually leads to poorer quality of sleep. This is largely due to the fact that when you are asleep on the sofa, the chances of being woken up by somebody moving or an electronic appliance is increased. This means that you never fall into the deeper realms of sleep. 

Inconvenient For People You Live With

Following on nicely from our previous point; when you fall asleep on a sofa it is quite inconvenient for the people you live with.
