Toons Top Tips For Shutters In Summer

If you have read our blog on keeping cool in bed you will have seen us mention the use of blinds in the bedroom. Shutters make a great and effective alternative to blinds and curtains, particularly in the summer months.

Shutters, unlike blinds, are a rigid structure that opens more like a door than blinds do, with the same option of opening and closing the slats as you please. Where blinds and curtains can be used in conjunction with each other, shutters are more suitable to replace curtains as a whole.

Choosing Between Blinds And Shutters

When it comes to choosing between blinds and shutters, there are a number of considerations for you to make. Here are just a few:
Does your window face the sun? If your window gets the majority of the sun during the day, installing shutters allows you to keep windows open and the slats partially closed. This will help to keep air flowing while reducing the impact the sun has on the heat in the room.
Will you want curtains too? Many of us use curtains to frame our windows or to keep the heat in during the winter months. If you have well-sealed windows, this will make no difference. However, if you are intending on curtains, you might want to take a look at our blinds instead of shutters.
Do you have space on either side of your windows? Shutters, especially coloured ones, look great, even when they are open, as they frame the sides of the window. The important thing to consider here is if you have space to the sides of your windows for the shutters to sit flush while they are open.

Choosing Your Shutter Style

The Shutters that we supply here at Toons are all made to measure and design from the team over at S:Craft. They have a wide selection of styles to choose from, including french style and tier-on-tier. So here are a few tips on choosing the right style for your space:
Have an idea in mind before you take a look at the full S:Craft collection. As the collection is so vast, having an idea in mind will keep you on track without becoming overwhelmed.
Listen to the team. The team here at Toons and over at S:Craft have a wealth of knowledge and experience, so if you have an idea in mind, and they make a suggestion that they believe will suit, consider what they have said before making your final decision.
Consider the room. For example, they have a collection of conservatory shutters. These have been specifically designed for that space and can help you to make the most of that room.
Take into consideration how you use that space. If the room is a bathroom, you may want to consider tier-on-tier shutters. These allow you to have two separate shutters, one above one below. This can help you to maintain your dignity with the bottom shut, and the top slats more open, allowing steam out.
Choose a colour that suits your style and the room. The range of colours that are available at S:Craft has something to suit every space, including the option of having the colour matched. You no longer have to settle with "that'll do" colours as you might with blinds.
