The Yellow Or White Light Debate

Posted on - 25th June 2021

With the introduction of brighter and whiter lights, many people are debating whether to have white or yellow lights, and the debate even goes as far as discussing specific rooms. So which lights are you having in which rooms? We'd love to give you our opinion, but the only room we can agree on is the kitchen!

The Kitchen

As the only room we can agree on, where else would we start but the kitchen! Our kitchens are usually known as the heart of the home, the place where people loiter at family functions, and of course the room where we feed some very hungry bellies. With so many different functions, how have we come to a lighting agreement so easily? Simple. Functionality. In our kitchens we prepare food and cook, this means it is the most important room for things to be true to colour, thus the agreement on white light.
Checking that food is cooked is extremely important, white light allows you to see the colour of food accurately. It also helps you to see fingers when chopping! For this reason, white spotlights are great in kitchens and can be aimed directly at food prep areas.

The Lounge

The lounge is one of the rooms with the biggest debate. As a room where families go to relax, the most common response here is to invest in a more yellow light. Yellow lights are known as being easy on the eyes and more relaxing. You may also find less glare on the TV!
However, there have been some good arguments for white light. Typically by those who look for a more minimal room, with clean lines and fewer trinkets. White light offers a cleaner appearance. It is also great for those who are big readers.
The final spanner in the works for lighting in the lounge is those who don't use their "big lights" at all, and who actually only light up the room with lamps. Again lamps are available in yellow or white lights. Yellow light lamps offer a subtle ambience, while white lights allow you to read easily.

The Bathroom

Aside from the lounge, the bathroom is the next biggest debate. On one side of the room, we have the shavers and the makeup artists where white light is key. Reducing the risk of shadows that lead to that 5 o'clock shadow, or some very poor make-up shading.
On the other side of the room, we have the long bathers, the ones who love a good relaxing bath and don't want the harsh white lights ruining the vibe.
The choice you make has to suit which you rely on your bathroom for the most. If you are more likely to shower, invest in some white lights, and a few candles while you're in the bath. If you have more baths, try out some yellow lights and invest in a light-up mirror for shaving and make-up.

Sorry, we can't make the choice for you over white or yellow lights! It's definitely a personal preference and you will always find someone who disagrees with your choice! So do what is best for you and your style!
