During winter especially, many of us use rugs in our home to add a spot of warmth, or even to protect the carpets from too much winter wear, such as muddy boots and paws. But what happens when your rug starts to look a bit worse for wear? Or you have a muddy patch that doesn't blend into the pattern?

Start With Loose Debris

Firstly, you will want to remove all loose debris from your rug. Depending on your rug this can be as simple as shaking it around outside or giving it a bit of a beat over a washing line to rid it of embedded debris.
Other rugs would fair better from a good hoovering. Start with just a standard hoovering, then take a brush attachment to remove ground-in debris, followed by another standard hoovering to collect anything you have loosened with the brush attachment.
You might think your rug already looks better! But any deeper dirt or stains will still be present.

Just A Light Freshen Up

With many rugs, particularly those that don't see wet and muddy feet and paws, they just need a simple freshen up every few weeks to keep them looking, and smelling, at their best.
The most simple way to freshen a rug is to remember the classic advert, "Do the shake and vac, and put the freshness back!". While there are a number of similar products now available, they are mostly a great way to return that fresh smell to your rug. And trying different brands allows you to test out a range of different scents.
These wonderful creations are as simple as shaking evenly across your rug, leaving a short while (following the instructions) and then hoovering back up. And time to enjoy the fresh smell!

Rug Shampooing

If you have further ground in dirt or stains, it's time to get a shampoo. There are a vast array of different carpet shampoos, all that boast different capabilities from stain removal to just a general clean.
We recommend taking a look at a range of shampoos to find the best fit for your rug, for example, some are better for shaggy rugs, while others are more appropriate for wool rugs.
Whichever you opt for, ensure that you follow the instructions as best as you can. This will help to ensure that your rug looks as good as it possibly can.

Wet Rugs

It goes without saying that once you have used a wet shampoo on your carpet, you are likely to find yourself with a wet rug. As it's the height of winter right now, it's not always possible to leave it out in the sun to dry naturally.
Colder wet rugs will take significantly longer to dry, and you could end up with the smell of damp rather than a nice fresh smell. Firstly, removing the majority of the moisture can be done by laying some towels across the rug and applying weight, such as walking on them, to draw out the moisture.
Following the towels, we highly recommend popping the heating on and moving your rug near to a radiator and rotating regularly. Or a fireplace if this is better for you.

Carpet Shampooer

Many of us will have access to a wet/dry vac or a carpet shampooer, which will help you to clean your rug easier than by hand. When using one of these, we recommend following the instructions and using the most appropriate cleaning solutions for your machine.
These vacuum cleaners will also have the ability to draw the moisture out of the rug, reducing the drying time greatly.
