Revamp Your Bedtime Routine For A Better Night’s Sleep

Posted on - 10th August 2020

According to a recent National Sleep Survey, many of us are struggling to get a good night’s sleep at the moment. The survey, which was carried out by The Sleep Council in partnership with both The Sleep Charity and Sleepstation, found that 75% of people felt the current situation was affecting their sleep. Alarmingly, around 12% of participants also reported they were experiencing severe symptoms of depression and 77% said that lack of sleep is interfering with their ability to function.

It is no surprise that the coronavirus has had a profound impact on our sleep. Not only have our routines been disturbed, we also have to find a way to process the new level of stress and anxiety that faces us everyday. No wonder we’re tired and finding it difficult.

In this blog post, we’re going to look at the ways in which you can revamp your bedtime routine for a better night’s sleep. While we can’t make the current situation vanish into thin air (if only!), there are things you can do to make sleeping a little bit easier and more refreshing!

Revamp Your Bedtime Routine

Find A New Work/Life Balance

If you are working from home it can be really difficult to establish a work-life balance. Especially if you don’t have a home office and find yourself working from your kitchen, living room, or spare room. Switching off from work can be really hard, but its important to give yourself time to decompress from your day.

One of the easiest ways to do this is keep the rooms in your home when you relax separate from work. Your bedroom is a sanctuary and should remain that way, so be firm and don’t take your laptop or work in there. Doing this will help your body and mind distinguish from work and relaxation, giving you the space you need to wind down and switch off after a busy day.

Free Yourself From Screens

If you’re finding it hard to sleep, consider screen-free time. Blue light from laptops and smartphones have a very real, proven impact on our sleep quality. Therefore, make a point of freeing yourself from screens at least one hour before bed. A great way to do this is invest in a good book, magazine, audiobook or podcast and spend some quality time reading or listening before bed.

Doing this will also help you switch off from the constant stream of news which plays no small part in how anxious you might feel about the current situation.

Pamper Yourself

Self-care is really important, especially at the moment. So, as you wind down for bed why not spend some time pampering yourself. A bath is a great way to do this. And if you leave your phone in a different room it’s a great way to untether yourself as you decompress from the day.

Other routines such as washing your face, brushing your teeth, painting your nails and moisturising can provide a great distraction that is both mindful and relaxing.

Don’t Exercise Too Close To Bedtime

Stretching and yoga poses along with meditation are fantastic ways to wind down. But if you favour more strenuous exercise, try not to do it too soon before bed. Exercise such as going for a run or intense cardio can leave you feeling wired and struggling to switch off - which is not what you need!

Create A Comfortable Bedroom

A cosy bedroom is really important to helping you get a good night’s sleep. Therefore, you should take some time to create a bedroom environment that is conducive to sleep. The perfect sleeping environment is one that is quiet, cool and dark. To achieve this, consider blackout blinds and curtains.

Unsurprisingly, your bed is also an important element for better sleep. A high-quality, comfortable mattress can make all the difference, as can your pillow and duvets. You should replace your mattress every 5 to 7 years, and your pillow should be replaced every year.
