We're Doing our Bit for National Bed Month

Posted on - 5th March 2019

During March, The Sleep Council looks to raise awareness about how a good, comfortable bed can help you to achieve a good night’s sleep. Their annual event has already kicked off and here at Toons, we’re doing our bit for this month-long campaign, as sleep not only affects your short-term health and wellbeing but also your health in the long run.

And hopefully, by the end of this article, we will have provided you with enough information to make a switch from your uncomfy bed to a new super comfy bed!

National Bed Month

Comfort is What are Beds are About!

Let’s face it, we all love our beds! We form an attachment to them as we spend on average around one third of each day tucked up snug. But in a recent study by The Sleep Council, the question was asked ‘What do you like most about your bed?’. Here's a snapshot of the results:

  1. 46% answered ‘it’s super comfy’
  2. 26% answered ‘it’s where I unwind/ relax’
  3. 15% answered ‘it’s nice and roomy’
  4. 6% answered ‘it’s how it looks’
  5. 3% answered ‘storage space’
  6. Another 3% answered ‘no turn mattress’
  7. And 1% answered ‘top of the range’

The results made one thing clear. Comfort is the main priority! So why do people still have uncomfortable beds? The answer to that question might be that people are just unaware that their bed is uncomfortable and, in fact, may believe it is another factor affecting their sleep.

In another study by The Sleep Council, they found that while 26% of those questioned stated that an uncomfortable bed was the reason for poor sleep, the remaining 74% thought it was another factor. Well is it? Because other answers provided were issues such as noise or a partner as a reason for a bad night’s sleep and there is evidence to suggest this is also bed related.

Being woken by a partner could mean that your bed or mattress is sagging, this means your meeting in the middle and not making the most of available space. Whereas noise is quite a vague reason, you can interpret this as noise from the bed or mattress. Creaks and shrieks from the bed joints could be keeping you up.

Don’t let uncomfortable beds steal vital sleep from your routine. A rule of thumb for beds is to replace yours every 7-8 years if you’re finding it to be uncomfortable. Like with most things, beds wear and often people don't realise that it was not as supportive as it once was. It’s only when you lie on a new bed that you realise what you’ve been missing.

Toon’s Tips for Getting a Better Night’s Sleep

It is so important for us to feel relaxed where we sleep. Cutting back on your bed is just not worth it as you can’t put a price on good night’s kip. Medical studies have linked a person's long-term health and wellbeing with the amount of uninterrupted sleep they have been getting. So, you want the absolute best to help you nod off.

It’s not all about the bed! So, here are Toon’s top tips for getting a better night’s sleep in honour of National Bed Month:

  1. Take a bed MOT - The sleep council have created a helpful questionnaire to check if your bed is up to scratch.
  2. Create an environment that encourages sleep - your bedroom might be a factor in your sleep distribution. An easy and simple change is to make sure your room is cool, quiet and dark.
  3. Change your night-time routine - Turn off the gadgets and intense television and instead dim the lights and settle into an evening of calming scents and smooth music. You could even relax with either a warm bath, a nice book or some gentle exercise of yoga or pilates.
  4. Make lifestyle changes - Small lifestyle changes such as switching out the sugary drinks and snacks, or high caffeine drinks and instead get healthier with fresh foods and a manageable exercise routine.
  5. Keep a diary - If you’re still struggling to drop off at night, jot down what you’ve eaten and drank throughout the day and compare the good nights and bad night’s sleep review what is different. The answer might be right in front of your eyes.
