How To Make The Most Of Your Compact Living Room

Decorating and furnishing a compact living room can feel like a bit of a challenge, can’t it? Too much and it can look (and feel) cluttered. Too little and it’s not functional. All in all, a bit of a headache!

Here at Toons, we know the struggle is real. But you don’t need to go it alone in your interior design efforts. We’ve put our heads together and come up with our top tips for decorating a compact living space. Keep reading for all the inspiration you need!

Let It Shine

No, we’re not talking about the well known Take That song. As good as it is. What we’re referring to here is natural light. Daylight is one of the best ways to create a bright and light atmosphere in even the smallest of rooms.

Semi sheer blinds and curtains are a brilliant way to do this. While both afford a level of privacy for your living space, they also allow light to flood in. What’s key here is to not plump for furnishings that might block daylight. That means keeping windows clear of furniture and opting for light coloured blinds or curtains. Venetian blinds are particularly good as you have complete control over the amount of light they allow, so you can switch things up as and when you need to.

Go Big In Your Home

We know, we know. Isn’t it counterproductive to have large pieces of furniture in a small room? The answer is not as straightforward as you think. Dramatic, statement pieces can be really effective in creating an interior design ‘moment’ in your living room.

What is key here is not to clutter up your living room with lots and lots of massive statement pieces. Choose one or two (a piece of art, table lamp, patterned sofa, etc.) and make them a focal point for the room. These key pieces will then act as a distraction when the rest of the room is kept relatively clutter free. What’s more, it’s much easier to build your decoration around these statement pieces than have an eclectic mash up of furniture to navigate.

Know Your Vibe

When it comes to a small living space, you have two choices. Either you embrace the size and play it up as a cosy and intimate room, or you do everything possible to create a light and airy atmosphere.

When you know your vibe and design your room around that aesthetic, you can really start to make the most of the space. For cozy living rooms, choose warm and inviting colours, sumptuous soft furnishings, and a large rug to really finesse the feel. And if you’re going for something a little more modern, plump for clean lines, fresh white walls, and just one or two statement pieces of furniture to really communicate your personality.

Clever Storage Solutions

Getting clever with your storage can be a great way to maximise on space. Display cabinets, modular units and coffee tables can work really well as places to keep your belongings. And the beauty is that you can choose a style to suit your aesthetic.

If you are into a more eclectic style, bookshelves and display cabinets are a fantastic way to showcase your interests. And if you favour neat and tidy, modular units and closed cabinets help you keep everything in one place and hidden from prying eyes.
