Keeping your House Warm this Winter

‘Tis the season to crank up the central heating, but how can you ensure that you’re keeping your house as cosy as possible this winter?

Heating our homes accounts for a huge chunk of the average household's energy consumption, so ensuring your house conserves heat effectively is not only good for your wallet, but the planet too!

Look out for draughts

While you might already have draught excluders for every door and window crack in your home, you could still be overlooking a range of small draughts. Letterboxes, keyholes and cat flaps can all invite unwanted draughts into your home during the winter months, consider keeping these covered during especially cold weather. If your home boasts any unused fireplaces, consider a chimney balloon, to prevent cold air entering, and heat escaping, via the chimney. Of course, don’t forget to also keep doors between rooms closed, particularly if any of the rooms in your house aren’t regularly used.

Think about the layout of your furniture

Furniture placed in front of your radiators will be absorbing heat, keeping your radiators clear will allow heat to circulate around the room more effectively, so move the sofa out of the way! If you’re thinking of changing the layout of your living room, explore our range of living room furniture here.

Check your timing

Why not try using the timer on your central heating system? Setting your heating to come on earlier, for example 30 minutes before you get up in the morning, or get home from work in the evening, can actually be more effective, even at a lower heat setting, than just cranking the heating right up when you need it.

Invest in a rug

Floors can account for a sizable amount of heat loss, so it’s important to consider them too. If your home features wooden flooring, why not consider a rug? Rugs not only help to mitigate heat loss through your flooring, but also keep your feet warm, and give a room a lovely cosy feel! Explore our collection of rugs here.

Consider your choice of curtains

Good quality, thick curtains will prevent heat escaping your house via its windows, you could also consider investing in curtains for your front and back doors, this too will help to insulate your home. If you’re thinking of freshening up your curtains this winter, explore our range here
