How to Choose the Right Sofa

Choosing a sofa takes time and thought, after all, it’s one of the most important pieces of furniture in your home, it’s where you eat, drink, entertain, read, watch TV... the list is endless!

You’ll need to choose a sofa that works for the activities you’ll use it for most, but not only that, you need to pick a style and size that suits your room, a colour and texture you love, and make sure that the measurements fit too- we all fear that moment when the delivery workers can’t fit the new sofa through the door!

So, choosing a new sofa really can feel like a mammoth task, but fear not- we’re here to help, and we’ve put together a list of the main things you’ll need to consider when you choose your new sofa!

Choose your colour and fabric

The fabric you choose will have a huge effect on how the sofa looks, so you should consider this as much as your choice of colour.

Consider not only the look of the fabric, but its practicality too. Do you have pets and/or young children? In this case it might be worth considering a fabric that’s easy to spot clean to remove spills and stains. If your home is free of children and animals on the other hand, you can perhaps be a bit more adventurous with your choices.

Consider your choice of colour with some practicality too, while you might love the idea of a cream sofa in your living room, it could be an invitation for stains! It’s also worth considering that darker and brighter colours will be affected more by sunlight, so if you’re choosing a sofa for your conservatory, it’s best to pick a neutral colour.

Considering practicality alongside the visual look of a sofa will allow you to pick the perfect colour and fabric for your home!

Pick the perfect shape

Choosing the shape and size of your sofa comes down to a couple of basic factors, the size and shape of the room, and the main activities your sofa will be used for.

A small sofa will look out of place in a very large room, while a sofa that’s too big will overwhelm a small room! Is your room big enough to handle a corner sofa, or would two separate smaller sofas look better?

Additionally, it’s worth factoring in the size of your family (including any pets that like to cuddle up on the sofa in the evening), plus any regular visitors to your home.

Ensure that your sofa is big enough to allow for a spot for each member of your family at once, while also ensuring that the size and shape of the sofa will not disrupt the flow of the room.

Check the measurements

Measuring the size of the room, and the area where the sofa will sit, will help you to envisage how the sofa will work in the room, and whether it’s the correct size or not. However, these are not the most important measurements you'll need to take!

Measure any doorways and unmovable obstacles in the route that the sofa will take from the delivery van to the spot where it will sit. Skipping this step could not only lead to your sofa not fitting through your front door, but could also lead to damage to your sofa if you manage to get it in, with some force!
