Simple Home Transformations With Rugs

Posted on - 27th March 2020

Rugs have been a firm favourite in households all over the world for years - centuries, in fact. Nowadays, most of us have rugs in our homes for a number of reasons. Some of us have them to add character to a space. Some of us use them to soften and warm a hard floor. And quite a few of us have them as a place for our pets to lie after a long day of doing nothing!

Whatever the reason, if you’re on the hunt for a rug for your living space or other room in your home then we’ve got some inspiration and top tips to help you out!

Size Matters

The size of your rug matters because it will have an effect on the overall look of a room. So how do you decide what size of rug to invest in?

Well, that depends on personal preference. If you are more of a minimalist, we’d recommend choosing a rug which has a perfect border of 1-1.5ft away from any of your furniture. In terms of shape, that’s entirely up to you, but if you prefer clean lines then a rectangular design will fit the bill quite nicely.

If you’re looking to create a cosy, homely feel, then you might consider buying a slightly larger rug than the space you want to fill. A rug that runs just under the sofa or edge of your bed is comforting and warming underfoot for those cold days, especially if you have wooden floors.

You can test out how a rug will sit in your room by laying some tape to the dimensions of the rug in the space you want to put it. This will give you a solid idea of how it looks before you commit to buying!

Make Your Rug A Feature

If you are renting, or don’t have the time or money to invest in decorating your home at the moment, a feature rug is a quick and easy way to revitalise your space. Bright colours and quirky patterns can be an excellent way of making a room stand out and drawing the eye, especially if you don’t have the scope to do something bold like installing a feature wall

Making a feature of your rug works really well when it is laid in the centre of the room and not touching any other furniture. Doing this draws the eye and can be used in conjunction with soft furnishings and other finishing touches to really create a WOW factor.

Add Colour & Texture

Soft furnishings and rugs are an excellent way to bring colour and texture to a room. Even if you favour a minimalist style, you’ll no doubt agree that just a hint of texture can bring hygge to a room that is perfect for snuggling up in an evening or at the weekend.

If you’re considering a rug to bring cosiness and texture to your home, here are few things to consider:

  • Is the rug in an area of high foot traffic? If so, consider a lower pile, as higher piles tend to become matted or flatten with heavy use.
  • Are there children and pets at home? Whilst a higher pile may be favoured by your furry friends, consider how easy it may be to clean and if that may bother you.
  • Do you have a log burner or open fire? Ensure that, whichever rug you choose, there’s no chance of it catching fire should a stray ember jump out.

Textured rugs and other soft furnishings offer a multi-sensory experience, creating warmth and pleasure throughout your interior design. So alongside the practicalities (like those listed above) plump for a rug that sparks joy too!

Choosing A New Rug

When it comes to rugs, finding one that works for your home can be tricky. But they are a great, low commitment way of shaking up your home decor without breaking the bank.

Our top tip for choosing a rug is to go for something you really love - just make sure that it fits in the space you’re looking to fill and it’s practical for other people (and pets!) in your home.
