Cosy Interiors For Winter 2020

Who doesn’t love snuggling up on a cold, wintry night? Whether you’re settling down to an evening of box-sets, a family movie night or getting cosy with a new book, there’s nothing better than feeling warm and snug in your living room or bedroom. Especially when the nights get darker and it gets chillier outside!

There’s no doubt about it, winter 2020 is all about making our interiors feel safe and cosy. And if you’re itching to give your home a refresh in time for the new season, we’ve got the low down of the very latest and greatest interior design trends to get you started!

What’s Trending In Interiors for Winter 2020

This year is all about home comforts. With so much uncertainty and change going on, our homes are our constant and, for many, a safe haven where family time and relaxation can be prioritised.

It’s no surprise then that the new season’s trends champion comfort, cosy textures, natural elements and flexible neutrals on which you can imprint your own style.

Neutral Shades

Neutral shades and tones form a fantastic foundation to cosy living rooms, lounges and bedrooms. These hues are all about communicating a sense of calm and restfulness, so think cream and linen shades when planning the colour palette of your rooms.

In recent years, with the rise of home bloggers and Instagram influencers, grey has also become increasingly popular. While it’s tempting to think that neutral grey might darken your interiors, it forms a fantastic base on which you can layer other natural tones such as beige and browns.

If you’d prefer to add more warmth to your interior, Dulux recently named their Colour of the Year 2021 as Brave Ground. Inspired by nature and earthy tones, this darker yet versatile reddy-brown shade offers familiarity and homeliness. It also pairs well with lots of different textures, such as wood and wool, and offers a warming backdrop to leafy green houseplants.

Vintage Quirkiness

Vintage interiors have been a long-lasting favourite for households that like to inject a bit of nostalgic style into their design. This year, our craving for homeliness and comfort has seen us turning to decorate our homes in what is affectionately termed ‘Granny Chic’. This kind of home style is all about patterns, colour and layering. Think bold patterned wallpaper, majestic full-length curtains and cosy sofas that straddle the style line between vintage and modern.

While this kind of style can be bold and clean, it can also afford to be a little more muted. Blush pink, navy blue, emerald green, and gold are all fantastic places to start and can be effortlessly mixed for maximum effect. Big, statement patterns are also the order of the day when it comes to Granny Chic. Don’t be afraid to mix things up by adding 3 or 4 different patterns to your interior. If balanced with your colour pattern this can have a striking, yet welcoming effect.

Go Au Natural

For quite a while rattan, wicker and other wooden furniture have been relegated to our garden rather than our homes. But with many of us looking to live more sustainably, these textures and materials have found their way indoors lately - to stunning effect.

Natural materials are really versatile and can be styled in any number of ways to suit your desired look. Paired with the neutral, earthy tones we mentioned earlier on, they really do create a calming effect, especially with the addition of embroidered cushion covers, chunky knit throws and handmade vases or finishing touches.

Muted Lighting

If you’re looking to create a calm and relaxing home interior, a shake-up of your lighting is a quick and easy way to bring about a whole new home look. Instead of glaring overhead light, the addition of a floor lamp which casts a muted glow around the room can have a really impactful effect.

Lampshades can also be used to great effect to throw light around the room in different ways, making it less harsh and overpowering. This is particularly good for bedroom spaces where you may want to spend the last hour or so of your day winding down.

Of course, the addition of a fireplace in any living rooms delivers instant hygge bliss and makes your home feel like a welcoming, cosy log cabin. The beauty of many fireplaces is that they come in all sorts of styles, from modern to classic, so it's easy to find the right make and model for your home.
