Celebrate World Sleep Day with Toons

The 19th March 2021 is the World Sleep Society’s ‘World Sleep Day’.

The theme for this year’s World Sleep Day is ‘Regular Sleep, Healthy Future’, and the focus is on the importance of healthy sleep for our wellbeing. So how can we work towards getting better sleep?

Of course, there are many lifestyle factors at play when it comes to your sleep cycle, and it’s important to consider your overall wellbeing if you don’t feel that you’re getting enough sleep. However, there are also small changes you can make to the decor in your bedroom that can actually improve your sleep too!

Invest in your bed

The number one consideration when it comes to improving your sleep quality is whether you need to invest in a new bed, or at least a new mattress. The importance of a good quality mattress cannot be overstated, not only will a good quality, comfortable mattress help you to fall asleep quicker, and sleep more soundly, it will also support your body better while you sleep, so you wake up feeling refreshed.

Keep your lighting soft

When it comes to unwinding before bedtime, it’s important to keep the lighting in your bedroom soft and minimal. If your bedroom doesn’t already feature lamps, or reading lights of some sort, it’s well worth considering them. Using a dim, soft light, rather than a full ceiling light, while you unwind before bed will help you to nod off easier at lights out.

Choose cool colours

Cool colours are much more conducive to good sleep than bright, busy colours and patterns. So keep the colour scheme of your bedroom, and particularly your bedding cool and simple, with soft colours like light blue, grey, lavender and pastels.

Try relaxing scents

Why not try introducing a relaxing scent into your bedroom? This doesn't just have to mean lavender scents either, we all have particular scents that trigger feelings of contentment and relaxation, pick out some candles or incense in your favourite scents, and burn them while you wind down before bed.

Keep it a work free zone

Finally, particularly while many of us are working from home more than usual, it’s important to keep your bedroom a separate space if you can. So keep any items that remind you of work, or trigger feelings of stress and worry out of your bedroom, and try to stay out of the room during the day too. That way your bedroom becomes purely a space for winding down and relaxing.
