Rugs are a fantastic addition to any home. However, they do bear the brunt of a lot of use! From heavy footfall to occasional spills, rugs protect hardwood floors and carpets from stains, scratches and other damages. That being said, they can also be used to make a real style statement, therefore keeping them looking fresh and clean is essential.

4 Ways To Keep Your Rug Clean

In this article, we’ve put together a few tips on how to care for your rug and get rid of spores, pollen particles and dust mites which may call it home.

Vacuum At Least Twice Per Week

Just like your carpet, rugs love dirt, dust and debris. And the only way to remove this is through either the use of a vacuum cleaner or carpet cleaner. While renting an industrial carpet cleaner can be quite expensive, we all have a vacuum cleaner, and it’s a good idea to make use of it on your rug at least twice a week.

For an even deeper clean, you can also give your rug a good shake outside if it’s small enough to handle in order to dislodge dirt prior to hoovering. And don’t forget to vacuum underneath the rug, too, as dust can accumulate here too!

What setting you use to vacuum your rug will depend on the type of machine you have. However, we do recommend using an upright vacuum cleaner or the nozzle attachment. Doing so will ensure the rug does not become damaged in the course of cleaning it.

If you’re ever in doubt, please refer to any instructions from the manufacturer when it comes to your rug. This is particularly true should you decide to use any powders or cleaners on the surface, as some may damage the appearance of the rug.

Keep On Top Of Spillages

To really make the most of your rug it’s important to keep on top of spillages. When you let liquids seep into and dry onto fabric they can be much harder to remove in the long run. Therefore, as soon as a spill happens be prepared to blot the affected area with a damp white cloth. While your instinct may be to rub, don’t do this as it can damage the surface.

When you have absorbed all the liquid from the spill with your cloth, hang the rug if you can. If you can’t, try and avoid walking on it until it is completely dry.

Should a spill happen and a stain dries, there are a number of ways you can address this. Firstly, if your rug is made of nylon, you can attempt to remove the stain with a steam cleaner. For others, the application of a mixture of white wine vinegar, washing up and warm water should work to remove most stains. Again, if you are unsure, always refer to the care instructions for your specific rug and test a small area before diving in.

Choose Wisely

For homes with pets and young children, rugs can be both decorative and protective. If this is the case, you may want to opt for a rug that is machine-washable.

For a home with pets, it is a good idea to plump for short pile rugs in a darker shade. A short pile will make keeping the rug clean and hygienic much easier, while the darker hue will hide a multitude of sins while still making your home look welcoming and inviting.

Use A Professional

If your rug is in need of an intensive clean, it may be wise to appoint the help of a professional or rent a carpet cleaner. These can be used to great effect to thoroughly wash and clean rugs, leaving them sparkling and clean. There is also a range of carpet and rug shampoos available, however, it is a good idea to double-check that they are suitable for your type of rug before using them.
